TEXAS HOMEOWNER FIELD GUIDE

Check your insurance coverage

Coverage starts with your policy, not the size of the hail.

Read the coverage before estimating a payment

Wind and hail may be covered, excluded, or insured separately. Check the declarations, roof endorsements, exclusions, and applicable deductible. A weather report cannot determine whether your policy covers a loss.

Questions to put in writing

  • Was wind and hail coverage in force on the suspected loss date?
  • Does a separate wind/hail deductible apply?
  • Is the roof settled at replacement cost, actual cash value, or under a payment schedule?
  • What exclusions or limitations does the insurer believe apply?

Save the policy version that applied on the loss date, including endorsements. Ask for the specific language behind a coverage decision.

Separate the questions

A contractor evaluates repair work. Your insurer evaluates a claim under the policy. A qualified attorney can advise on a dispute. These roles are different, and an inspection is not a promise of coverage.
